An introduction to Jewish Meditation and Mindfulness 5 weekly Sunday sessions Jan. 6 through Feb. 3, 2008 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Contemporary Jewish spirituality is informed by rich streams of biblical, rabbinic and Kabbalistic teachings, as well as by other spiritual traditions and modern psychology. Through this introductory class we will learn to expand and deepen our spirituality using both mindfulness (insight) meditation and traditional Jewish/Hasidic meditation. Mindfulness is a meditative process that helps to focus and quiet the mind and to release physical and emotional distress. Part of each session will include instruction in and practice of mindfulness meditation. Each session will also include study of selections from Torah, liturgy and Hasidic texts. We will also learn a variety of Hasidic and Kabbalistic meditation techniques that aim to create a joyous, living awareness of God and spirituality filling all of life. Some techniques will focus on integrating meditation with davenning (prayer), while others will focus on expanding God consciousness. PLEASE NOTE: Individuals who participate should be willing to make a strong commitment to 20 - 30 minutes of DAILY mediation practice throughout the course. No previous experience with meditation is required. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required. ***This class is not recommended for anyone who has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder, or who is currently experiencing major depression, psychosis or chronic, severe anxiety.
